Lust, Caution - 16/07/2023
The inaugural screening of Aftersun Film Club brought together a diverse group of 13 friends, both old and new, who gathered in Kerry's cozy living room to watch Ang Lee's masterful creation, Lust, Caution.
Loic's heartfelt selection provided a compelling exploration of "Desire through the Asian Lens" - the Film Clubs theme for this month
Immersing the audience in a rich tapestry of emotions and historical settings, Lust, Caution unfolds against the backdrop of Hong Kong in 1938 and later Shanghai in 1942, during the Japanese occupation. The film weaves together elements of eroticism, espionage, romance, and mystery, drawing its inspiration from Eileen Chang's evocative novella published in 1979.In the aftermath of this cinematic experience, Loic steered a conversation towards the question of where the boundaries of duty and desire converge, with the group delving into the motivations of the characters and the intricate conflicts they faced. Subsequently, the conversation moved towards the portrayal of explicit sexual scenes, which prompted an overwhelmingly unanimous consensus among the viewers - these raw and intimate moments were undeniably essential in conveying the profound intensity and emotional depths of the film.
See you at the next cinematic adventure!
