A SUN - 9/12/23

The Club had a wonderful time at the screening of A Sun, a Taiwanese drama directed by Chung Mong-Hong. This film was the second in our series of films exploring the theme of The Weight of Expectations. A Sun follows the lives of a dysfunctional family whose members struggle with their own failures, secrets, regrets and loss.

In this work, Chung Mong-Hong challenges the conventional notions of good and evil and shows how people can change for better or worse under different circumstances. How we can be good and still be lacking or bad and still on our way to fullness, or even just exist in this duality.

The club members applauded the film for its stunning cinematography, haunting score and realistic performances. Despite its long runtime of 156 minutes, the film captivated the Aftersunettes (yes, this name will stick eventually) with its gripping story and complex characters.

After the screening-- in true Aftersun tradition, Loic led a lively discussion, where we shared our thoughts and insights on the film's themes, symbols and messages. It seems, there's a version of each of us in Chung Mong-Hong's characters. We exist in every pocket of this story through our own relationship with family, with the world or with the self.

A Sun is a powerful and profound film, deserving more attention and appreciation from an international audience, much like the previous masterpieces screened at Aftersun.

Until next time! hug someone, hydrate and seize the day (or whatever the dad says in

the movie) if you feel like it!
