CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH - 24/3/24

It's not easy like we were saying. It's actually really hard
- Andrew

The Aftersunettes convened on a warm Sunday evening in Bukoto, embracing the theme 'Uninhibited.' The first film they delved into was Cooper Raiff's second full feature, 'Cha Cha Real Smooth,' which follows the story of Andrew, a 22-year-old recent college graduate grappling with self-discovery and the search for meaningful connections. Andrew's character proved to be at the heart of how the club members dissected the film's core messages. the movie through its protagonist and amazing cast delves into the struggles of figuring things out as an adult, the need for connection, boundaries, self-awareness, and kindness.

In the evening's discussion, the club members honed in on the uncertainty and lack of direction that often marks the journey into adulthood but also, the film's poignant depiction of self-awareness by showing characters grappling with their personal development while fully conscious of their imperfections and virtues.
They observed that Through interactions and relationships, the film highlights the universal need for connection and the challenges that come with establishing boundaries.
According to many members, 'Cha Cha Real Smooth' beautifully captures the essence of kindness. The film portrays it not through grand acts, but through the small, daily decisions that showcase the characters' empathy and human spirit. While some argued that Andrew's character's candid spirit was a sign of an uninhibited sense of immaturity, others praised his courage and authenticity and added the importance of a self-aware 'Jig Conductor' in life.

Another point that was raised was that the film does not offer easy answers or clichéd resolutions. Instead, it presents life as a series of moments—some awkward, some tender, and some profoundly transformative. It's a testament to Raiff's skill as a filmmaker that he can weave these threads together into a story that feels both specific and universal. But also, the club applauded Raiff's carefulness and gentleness in exploring mental health and how it affects how we perceive the world and the people around us.

This is a movie that will leave you thinking about your life journey and the people who have impacted it. The film celebrates the beauty of life's unpredictability and how it can help us grow. For anyone who has ever felt lost in life's dance, this movie is a gentle nudge to find your rhythm and keep moving forward, to Cha Cha Real Smooth.

As always, don't forget to drink water and hug someone.

Ciao!
