GIRL WALK // ALL DAY - 14/04/24
"Why are you dancing?"
Encapsulating our theme of ‘Uninhibited’, the film follows a day in the life of The Girl (Anne Marsen) as she dances through New York City. She tries in vain for most of the movie to encourage New Yorkers on their daily missions to work and shop to take a moment to just dance!
The 78-minute movie is set to Girl Talk's 2010 album "All Day" – a maximalist mashup of epic pop songs featuring 373 music samples. The soundtrack gave a feeling of nostalgia with songs from 5 decades including John Lennon, the Rolling Stones, and the Jackson 5 rubbing up against Rihanna, M.I.A., and Aphex Twin. Sunnettes commented on how song lyrics were matched to the visuals in many parts – be in line with locations or how The Girl and others danced in tune with the words.
Many attendees said they would not have watched ‘a feature-length music video’ alone, but undeniably enjoyed the communal pop experience of watching together with fellow ciniphiles. Remember the good old days of watching hours of MTV?
It was hard not to find joy in this love letter to New York. Many Sunnettes felt like going dancing after the movie, and our first mini Sunnette attendees even cracked out some uninhibited moves in the studio!
Don’t forget to dance like no one is watching!
Till next time x
