Mr. X: Mary usually does the carving but tonight since you are our guest, you could do it, Henry. All right with you?

Henry Spencer: Of course. I'd be happy to. So I just, uh... I just cut them up like regular chickens?

Hello, cinephiles!

Our last screening took us beyond the realms of normalcy, sanity, and possibly good taste. For the first time, we decided to switch things up by showing a short film before the main feature! the film of choice was the beautifully animated 1979 Asparagus by the late American filmmaker Susan Pitt. A film about a lonely woman who wants to be--- well, asparagused. 

This experience was ultimately followed by our main feature, David Lynch’s Eraserhead. The evening was a surreal success, filled with laughter, gasps, and a baby. 

As this season's theme, we aimed to explore movies that transcend the ordinary and dive into the depths of the bizarre, movies that challenge conventional narrative, and reason. The opening scene, with its eerie soundscapes and industrial nightmares, set the tone for a night where reality took a back seat and weirdness rode shotgun.

The club members wondered about the meaning of every scene. Was it all a dream? how much of it is a dream? Is it a metaphor for something? And what the hell was that baby?

As per our tradition, the discussion was centred on the different themes hiding under the weirdness. some members spoke about Lynch's depiction of parenthood, while others spoke about the effect of industrialisation and consumerism. But the consensus was loud: this was an awesome time and a weird movie and unlike the chicken, Eraserhead cannot be carved like a regular movie...
